Epilogue

Jesse had a tendency to live off impulse purchases and restaurant fare; on the other hand, he loved almost everything Dave cooked. Dave had a tendency to obsess over small purchases and take far too long to get everything they needed, simply because he couldn't decide between one thing and another. His indecisiveness was painful and frustrating. In the military, you ate what they gave you. Before that, he'd been too poor to have choices.

But when they both shopped, and then brought everything home, it seemed to work out better. Certainly there were times they bought twice the milk they needed, but when that happened, Dave made lots of tapioca and chocolate puddings. If they both bought pancake mix and forgot the syrup, they ate pancakes spread with melted grape jelly.

Jesse was easy to cook for because he liked pretty much anything, and he wasn't used to having a lot of homemade things, so it was still a special treat for him. Making eggs, toast, and coffee had been about the size of his repertoire before Dave moved in.

Now, there were still days they lived on popcorn and TV dinners, but there were also days when Dave took over the kitchen, cut up and fried a whole chicken, boiled and mashed potatoes, made peas and gravy, and sometimes even baked a pie. His mother had taught him to cook when he was little, and sometimes when he was in high school and she was ill, he'd done all the cooking.

Now he did it for enjoyment, taking mastery over something he could control, creating exactly what he wanted to eat. Jesse had a way of hovering when whatever was cooking began to smell ambrosia-like, but Dave worked best when he was alone, could concentrate completely and not try to talk to anyone or shoo anyone away from half-finished food.

Other days, Dave needed all his strength just to survive, and was glad enough to eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or cold pizza, something that didn't require effort or thought or mastery over anything.

On the days when Dave cooked a big meal, Jesse usually washed up afterwards, or at least helped.

If he cooked too much, leftovers weren't a problem. Jesse liked to snack. And snack. And snack. He should've been a big fat guy as much as he ate; his metabolism must've been extraordinary.

Summer passed in a blaze of glory, going out with a bang when even Halloween was blazing hot. They gave candy bars to the neighborhood kids, and if Dave had to go away and stay by himself for a while afterwards, Jesse didn't say a word about it, just held him extra tenderly that night in bed and rubbed his back till he calmed enough to sleep.

People accepted with almost ludicrous ease that Dave the cheapskate wanted to save money by living off his buddy. Jesse made sure to tease him about it regularly when they were around people.

When they were by themselves, Jesse got out his record player, put on the Rolling Stone, pulled all the curtains, and they danced.
